About the show:
Comedy/Drama. Sometimes fences make for the best neighbors. In this hilarious and thought-provoking play, young couple Pablo and Tania are living the American dream when they move into an upscale neighborhood next to longtime residents Virginia and Frank. But a disagreement over a long-standing fence line soon spirals into an all-out war of taste, class, privilege, and entitlement.
Tania Del Valle - mid 20s-mid 30s. A woman of Hispanic heritage from the southwest United States, working on her Doctorate degree. Wife to Pablo, pregnant and excited to create natural beauty in their new home and yard. Hesitant at first to make any trouble regarding the property line dispute with the neighbors, but rises to the occasion when things escalate.
Pablo Del Valle - late 20s-late 30s. A man of Chilean ancestry, husband to Tania, eager to make partner at his law firm by hosting a soiree in his newly-renovated back yard. Direct and logical in manner, not always sympathetic, but only asks for what he’s fairly entitled to when it comes to their new property.
Virginia Butley - mid 50s-mid 60s. A Caucasian woman, well educated, works as an engineer at a reputable company, proud of her historic neighborhood. Has a sharp tongue and a strong sense of her own upper-middle class status, and has a lot to learn when it comes to her prejudices. But, there’s a soft heart underneath her waspish exterior.
Frank Butley - mid 50s-mid 60s. A Caucasian man, also well educated and works as a consultant. A kind and gentle man unaware of his own cultural blind spots. His greatest passion is his perfectly manicured garden, which brings out an aggressively defensive streak when it’s threatened by a property dispute.
No one of these characters is a villain or a hero, but rather authentic people who stumble when they find themselves navigating new territory, literally and figuratively.
