Theatre Lawrence Youth Troupe

Youth Troupe classes, camps, and shows are designed to ignite each child’s passion for the performing arts, foster creativity and self-expression, and build confidence and communication skills. Of course, students also make  new friends in a supportive, fun environment.  Through the school year we offer after-school opportunities for elementary and middle school age students.  In the summer we expand our programming to include high school students.

Adult Classes

It's not just kids who can benefit from taking a class at TL! You'll find adults taking advantage of opportunities throughout the year. Offerings vary from playwriting, to dance, to acting.

Penguin Project

The Penguin Project is a national program that gives students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, as well as those with autism and other neurodiversities, the opportunity to fill all the roles in a musical production. We call these students our ARTISTS.

One special feature about the Penguin Project is that each ARTIST is paired with a MENTOR to become his or her special assistant and friend. MENTOR opportunities are open to any neurotypical students (ages 10- 21) interested in working alongside and assisting an ARTIST during our musical theatre production.

In the past our Penguin productions have included Aladdin JR, The Aristocrats KIDS, Shrek JR, Beauty and the Beast JR, and Frozen JR.

Our Penguin Project usually starts in January with an information meeting for anyone interested in the program.  For mentors, our bootcamp, held prior to the start of rehearsals, helps mentors learn expectations, as well as some of the song and dances ahead of time.  We start rehearsals for everyone right after spring break.  We meet two late afternoons a week and rehearse through first of July.  Our Penguin Project performances are generally the second weekend in July.

School's Out Theatre's In

Our School’s Out, Theatre’s provides theatre opportunities for students when they have a day off or holiday from school.  We usually offer between 8-10 SOTI each year.  During these one and two day workshops, we provide fun and dramatic activities centered around a theme.  Past SOTI’s have included Wintering with Wizards, Robin Who? Lives in Sherwood Forest, and Fabulous Fairy Tale Friday!   Students bring a sack lunch and participate in crafts and games, while working on their performances skills.
