About the show:

Musical Concert. Inspired by the painting A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte by George Seurat, this Stephen Sondheim masterpiece celebrates and explores the challenges of art, life, and putting it together. This special event will be presented concert-style for one weekend only.

About this production: We are staging this show as a concert event. That means there will be minimal staging, costumes will be concert attire, and there will be few scenic elements. The show will be performed memorized.

What to prepare of auditions: Those auditioning will be asked to sing approximately 16 measures to show off their voice. Due to the musicality of the show, we have identified some cuttings from the score that feature a wide range of vocal abilities and colors with supportive underscoring. You are free to pick whichever you sound best; not necessarily the role that sings it. We encourage these selections for ease of those auditioning and the accompanist, however, you DO NOT have to audition with any of these cuttings. You may also be asked to read a few lines from the script.

Character Descriptions

Act I takes place in 1880s France. Act II takes place predominately in contemporary America. The doubling of actors for characters in Act I and Act II is suggested by the script. We may cast the doubled characters differently depending on our production’s actors.

George

In Act 1: George Seurat, a rather cold artist obsessed with his work at the cost of his personal life. Constantly troubled and borderline obsessive.
